Advent Definition: The arrival of an important person, thing, or event.
In December we celebrate the arrival of Jesus and Advent is about the anticipation leading to the greatest event in history. It has been celebrated since the 300's A.D. It traditionally consists of an advent wreath with 5 candles. It looks something like this:
Why a wreath?
The circle has no beginning and no end which represents God love for us. God's love is eternal; with no begining or end. It also represents eternal life which becomes ours through faith in Jesus Christ.
Even the colors represent something! The outside candles represent the 4 weeks leading up to Christmas Day.
Week 1: Hope (purple) Week 2: Peace (purple)
Week 3:Joy (pink) Week 4: Love (purple)
Last but not least, the white center candle is lit on Christmas Day and it is known as the
Why purple candles? Violet is a liturgical (meaning "public worship") color that is used to signify a time of prayer, penance, and sacrifice.
Why a pink candle? The color pink means joy, so a pink candle is lit on the week of Joy.
Why a white candle? The white candle reminds us that Jesus is the spotless lamb of God, sent to wash away our sins. His birth was for his death, his death was for our birth!
