Only Mortal is the high school praise band of The EDGE, our mid-week
outreach program to high school students in and around Moreno Valley. Their
name is taken from 1 Corinthians 15:53, "For the perishable must clothe
itself with the imperishable, and the mortal with immortality" (NIV).
Below is a list of who is in the band and our tech people. Before that, let
us share with you what it means to be Only Mortal…
Only Mortal - A Biblical Look
The passage from which we
get our name from is a terrific passage in that it reminds us that in the
end times, in all times, God has the power to change the mortal to the
immortal. The word Mortal means "subject to death". God is omnipotent
("all-powerful") and it is he who can do with us what He wants. We are Only
Mortal and realize that as mere mortals, we all fall short of the Glory of
God (Romans 3:23) and destined for death. It is with that humble attitude
that we approach this band knowing that we can do nothing apart from God;
but pray that God will use us as we seek to follow Him (Galatians 1:10).
Here is our theme verse in the context of the other verses surrounding it in
1 Corinthians 15…
50I
declare to you, brothers, that flesh and blood cannot inherit the kingdom of
God, nor does the perishable inherit the imperishable. 51Listen,
I tell you a mystery: We will not all sleep, but we will all be changed -
52in a flash, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trumpet.
For the trumpet will sound, the dead will be raised imperishable, and we
will be changed. 53For the perishable must clothe itself with
the imperishable, and the mortal with immortality. 54When the
perishable has been clothed with the imperishable, and the mortal with
immortality, then the saying that is written will come true: "Death has
been swallowed up in victory." 55"Where, O death, is your
victory? Where, O death, is your sting?" 56The sting of death is
sin, and the power of sin is the law. 57But thanks be to God! He
gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ. 58Therefore,
my dear brothers, stand firm. Let nothing move you. Always give
yourselves fully to the work of the Lord, because you know that your labor
in the Lord is
not in vain. (1 Corinthians 15:50-58, NIV)
